A Short Post this Time

Not much to report, especially since I am hellaciously busy these days. But I have not forgotten about this blog, even if I post here infrequently. I will say that it's given me stuff to do in-between the production schedule for Military Miniature.

That said, life has been a whirlwind. And if you haven't picked it up already (Shameless plug incoming!), grab yourself a copy here.  I am just trying not to go crazy these days, as there are also some personal matters happening (all good I promise!).

So, till about May or June, I'll be a little out of pocket here, but that said, I didn't want my loyal blog readers to think I had forgotten them. I will just be a bit too busy to post here. But I promise I will be back to my admittedly infrequent schedule soon!

I did want to get into what I see as the future of the blog. I'd always founded this blog to cover something I'd always had an interest in, and that hasn't changed. I just got two jobs now, and well, that does suck up a lot of time.

That said, I don't regret a minute of either, and I will say, it's given me some freedom to contemplate what to do with this blog, and for now, I am just going to stay the course and post when I can. But I won't be posting "because I can." It will be posting when a) I have something to say and b) It's actually useful to you, the reader.  As you know, I try hard to keep these fluff posts to a minimum.

But I felt you all deserved to know what the hell was going on here. I do promise, I will do my best to keep content going as much as I have the time!

This blog has been and will always be a labor of love, and I do hope it's been useful to you as well?

A Somewhat Longer News Post - Lots Going on These Days!

I promised more, and I am delivering, there's been a lot of developments in the Twilight: 2000 world. First, there's been a release of a new supplement for those fans of US-based campaigns. Namely, the release of the Pacific Northwest Sourcebook. I was very pleased in my first read through of this book, and it's chock full of information (and potential wargaming opportunities, finally, something to do with my 20mm Liberation Canadians armed with FN-FALs and Sterling SMGs!)

Taken from DriveThruRPG

The book is comprehensive, smart and well written by Clayton Oliver. My only complaint, no maps. I can't really fault the designer as much as you might think. My own module writing efforts have run into some trouble because of the issue with finding contemporary maps online (there doesn't seem to be a drive to add 1995 AAA or Rand McNally maps online to anywhere. Kind of a pain in the arse, but one does what they can). I especially love the cold weather rules and the vehicles in the book. Japanese AFVs, this I did not expect!

But I still highly recommend the book and feel it's well worth the money invested. And for $9.99 as a PDF? It's a bargain. The PDF is available on DriveThruRPG, and is already selling well (It hit Silver Seller on DriveThru already!). I especially like the description of the Soviet advance into Seattle (anyone think Clayton Oliver channeled this PC game when he wrote this? Then again, I sometimes wonder if the designers of World In Conflict channeled Twilight: 2000?), and the detailed breakdown of the various military units available (Hi, ORBAT nerd, comes with being a wargamer.)  I promise a Module Suitability Review soon! Plenty of wargaming ideas to be had here. I give this 4.5 out of 5 mushroom clouds!

The second bit of news is Chico has struck again, and for this ORBAT nerd, his stuff is always a fun bit of scenario mining, but this time, he has outdone himself. His work, War in the Far North, is just plain gold. He's also working on some stuff that will be of assistance to all Twilight: 2000 players in general, and that's some great info on military operations in the Artic (not just personal survival rules, as found in the Pacific Northwest book) and a good map for campaigning in the Northern Theatre! In short, well done Chico! I promise, a Module Suitability Review is coming!  I give this also 4.5 out of 5 mushroom clouds.

As for where I have been, well, I have a paid blogging gig with these guys: EpochXperience.

It's good and It's a paid gig, which is always a good thing for a professional writer like myself (don't panic, I have a day job, also as a writer.) I am trying to post to this blog at least once or twice a month so, so don't fret. I will be making regular posts as often as I can. In the meantime, stay frosty and watch the Giger Counter my friends.

Short News Post - New Company in 28mm I've Discovered?

Well, they're new to me. I'd like to introduce you all to Studio Miniatures. I've seen some of their stuff, and it would fit right in for Twilight: 2000. I especially like the National Guard survivors as they're labeled, pictured below.

Courtesy of Studio Miniatures

I especially like the "Will and Tom Set". These guys have a lot of character.

Courtesy of Studio Miniatures

Having discovered them, I found some of their other sets that would be of interest for someone doing Twilight: 2000 in 28mm, especially if you like certain movies or TV shows? I get the feeling more will be coming? I don't do 28mm normally, but this is kind of piquing my interest.

There are oodles of figures to interest any 28mm Post-apoc gamer, and I think the sculpting standards look pretty good. All in all, I give them a 4.5 out of five mushroom clouds! Their website can be found at www.studiominiatures.com

Short News Post

Hey all,
I wanted to let everyone know "500 Miles.." is far from dead. I've just had a lot going on RL wise. Nothing bad, all good, just very, very, busy. We have a lot coming up in the pipeline, and I wanted to let folks know what to expect, as well as get a blog post out for the month!

So, without further ado, here is what's coming up:

  •  Reviews of some new figures from Ehliem of specific interest to the Twilight: 2000 miniatures gamer.
  • A new Module Suitability Review of an article on Advent Crown, the NATO offensive in Poland in 1997.
  • A review of the new Colors of War Book by Battlefront.
  • My upcoming trip to Historicon!
I think that's enough on my end. TTFN all and happy gaming!

Some Random Thoughts and Ideas

Some of this might be a bit OT, but I do need to get it off my chest somewhere I suppose.

First, I am being published as a sci-fi author! Granted, it's a short story in an anthology, but I am being published for a work of fiction!

Taken from Canon Publishing

Yeah, I know, not at all on-topic, but please forgive the indulgence. It's a big deal and I do hope many of you go out and grab a copy come April 1. No, it's not a joke.

Also, I wanted to pass this bit of news to local folks:

https://thegamestavern.com/blogs/news/important-announcement-we-are-closing-shop-to-reconfigure-the-business?fbclid=IwAR1KqhYbk06NOGImpUC7M7BjiZ9oYHhhtQvQJGS9AQ-oK4km225Pqm8eoBI

Important Announcement: We are closing shop to reconfigure the business.

by John Denton

Today the team at The Games Tavern has made the challenging decision to close the doors to the shop to reconfigure the business in a way to continue to support you all – the most amazing gamer patrons in the world!

Without you none of this adventure would have been possible, and with your continued support we hope to provide continued content and service. We care about all of you and want to see the community grow and flourish.

If you have miniatures/models in the cases, or personal items in the shop please stop by to retrieve them. We want to make sure everyone gets a chance to pick their things up before we start the work over here moving things around. Please call over the shop to schedule and we will gladly help you secure your items.

If you have special orders we have contacted you about please come pick them up this week! We have some items which we have called, emailed, or more to put them into your hands for at least a week now. Those items want to go home with you.

For any special orders we were unable to acquire because our suppliers were out of stock, which were pre-paid we will be issuing refunds shortly because we will be unable to make the orders while we reconfigure and do not want you to have to wait to receive your items.

I want to thank the amazing team and staff at The Games Tavern for the amazing job they do every day.

Keylon’s management of the shop has been outstanding and I cannot think of a better person to continue to work with in the future as we chart a new path. Thanks to Keylon we have grown far better than we expected. His ability to help each and every customer has been wonderful.

Ed’s general management and straight talk is legendary, and his ability to step in and offer the right guidance to the The Games Tavern as we grow continues to astound me, and I thank him for our chats.

To all staff past and present I am thankful because each of you add something to the mix, and continue to enrich our knowledge of the hobby.

For specific requests related to picking up your items or reserved orders which arrived, refunds of pre-orders mentioned above email: john@thegamestavern.com

Sincerely,

-John

I am really unsure as to what it means for the ultimate fate of The Games Tavern. I know I appreciated having them around and they were a quality shop. Let's hope this is temporary and they come back bigger and better than ever! Not much else to report, but we'll see where this goes!

Been prolific lately, and have a question for my readers?

Well, got a question for my readers? I am thinking of moving the blog to Wordpress. I like the features and it's got a lot more tools for me, but the $48 a year is a bit steep for me right now. So, were I to move, I'd probably do a paypal donation cup here to raise the funds. Yes, I know, it may not sit well with some folks, but if 12 folks gave $4 each, I could get the blog running for a year. And if we don't raise the money, we don't move and I will return the money, simple as that.

But before I do it, I'd like to hear from you, the reader, before I do it. I've given the idea some thought, and probably throw in extra content for those who do donate. Maybe dare I say it, a podcast, though that would be a rough road to hoe, as the only microphone I have are the iffy Samsung headphones that came with my phone! But I would give it a try!

But I really want some input from you all first. I've enjoyed this blog immensely, and the contest and the outpouring of interest has been a tonic to me, especially during the winter months as I do tend to a bit of lethargy and feeling down, so writing a post or three of interest to the readership puts a smile on this ol' gamer's face.

So, here's your chance, let me know here, or at 500milest2k@gmail.com, or care of the facebook page. I will be setting up a place to comment there too. I'd really like to know if I am on the right track in general, or what more you, the reader would like to see.

Thanks all, and here's to a full still, plenty of ammo, and a inactive Geiger Counter.

   Your humble writer,

   Jason Weiser

The Writing Team is Growing!

Well everyone, we have a new Associate Writer here at "500 Miles..." Evil Von Scary is a long time fan of the blog, and his modeling efforts on the Twilight 2000 fp and workshop page on Facebook are both prolific, and a sight for the eyes.

Those are the reasons I asked (begged him, really), to join the staff of "500 Miles..". I asked him to talk about the kits he has worked on, the methods he has used, and to review the kits he has worked on.

I am still slogging through the Iran-Iraq books I mentioned previously, its a tough read, and it's engaged a minor pet peeve of mine. Proofreading matters. I know they cost money, but running a foreign language book through Google Translate and calling it done is not a way to proceed. Believe me, you'll please more customers in the long run if you are publishing anything for sale if you give it a few good edits.

Rant over, and I will try to keep them few and far between, but I really needed to get it off my chest.

Also, forgot to mention that Henry Hyde, author of the Wargaming Compendium (an exceptional book ANY wargamer should have on his shelf), as well as former managing editor for both Battlegames and Miniature Wargames magazine, mentioned us during a Q & A on his podcast on his Paetron page (its members only to hear the podcast, but we here at "500 Miles" encourage you to join up!) Thank you, Henry!

A Short Post - New Maps of the Caucasus on Drive Thru RPG!!

Hello everyone, November is going swimmingly, and I am getting back into the swim of things, but I heard about this neat new thing that's just come out on DriveThru RPG for $4.95 or as a PDF and Poster for $6.95.

Taken from DriveThru RPG

The map is very well done in the old 1st Ed Campaign Map style from the boxed set, as well as the Northern Germany map from Going Home. The map is full color, with very clearly marked out locations and terrain on the map. It also has a hex overlay option in the PDF and JPEG options. In short, it's a wonderfully done map, and it also has marked out railways and airbases, two things the old campaign map did not have.

In short, this thing is a roleplayer's godsend, or if you're doing a campaign map for a miniatures game (Hint, Hint!). It's got adventure potential galore.

In short, do not walk, run to get your copy of this. I am hoping Albatross Press does more maps of other areas of the world, as the air navigation maps that were often enclosed with 2nd Edition products were very difficult to use from a RPG standpoint.

Some ideas that come to me are:

  • A campaign by US Special Forces units based in Iran to stir up trouble in the Trans Caucauses against the Soviets?
  • Recovery of a crashed US B-52 or B-1 with nuclear weapons aboard.
  • Move Satellite Down from Baja to the TransCauscasian region? With some modifications (Brupp becomes a suitable Russian name, and instead of a cult, he proves to be an ultra loyal party hack with some strange ideas on party loyalty?)
  • An OPFOR campaign of a small Soviet unit far from home, surrounded by tons of locals who do not like them...or each other.
So, next up will be the East African Sourcebook. I intend to get that writeup out soon, probably in the next week or two.

Till next time!

Yet Another Short Post

It seems PSC has remained quite busy, as their usual Friday surprises have a big one for us all!

Picture by PSC, taken from PSC Facebook Page

There aren't any other details right now, but they look pretty good for 3d masters, assuming that is what they are, and with a little modification and some details from aftermarket manufacturers like Legend or Black Dog or S & S Models for stowage, they would fit right into the Twilight: 2000 milieu.

In other news, Shaun of S & S Models had to switch websites, as there was unspecified issues with the old one. The link provided above does work as it has been tested by yours truly.

This will definitely be my last post before my wedding on the 21st, and I want to let everyone know, I will be back sometime in Early November. I won't be making Fall-In after all as money and time will simply not allow it. But, that said, I intend to get a good chunk of modeling and painting in once the wedding is done so there will be more to post as the year rolls on as well as into the new one.

Cheers everyone!

I do hope the T-55 "Willstarter" is concluded soon as I am looking forward to that effort coming to fruition so we can review some of them here for you. I suspect PSC's usual high standards and ease of construction will shine through again here.

In other news, as I have said, things are a bit light now due to my impending nuptials. I am going to be at the National Capitol Model Soldier Society's show tomorrow, and I will be wearing my blue Potomac Wargamer's polo shirt, so if you see me and love the blog? Come on by and chat, I will be there representing, and showing off some of my Battletech/Alpha Strike efforts.

I will post a show report in any case!

Another new module for Twilight: 2000!

Image taken from DriveThru RPG, IP is FFE
It has been a red letter year for Twilight: 2000 fans. First, there was the release of the East African Sourcebook, which caused quite the buzz, and yes, fans, I will review it as soon as I can (got that wedding coming up), and now? Now we have a new adventure, Rook's Gambit, by A.R. Bergesen (known to many Twilight: 2000 forum goers as Raelleus!) . Like the previous work from FFE, this is another PDF only project for $2.99 and all I can say is, this nostalgia ridden Twilight: 2000 fanatic is overcome with joy.

I suspect there are other projects in progress (and some of them, I have personal knowledge about, some, I just suspect, but I will say no more than that). I applaud Marc Miller for going this route, there's a lot of stories to be told by the fans, and yes, PDF publishing allows them to be told. I do promise I will review the module from a miniaturist standpoint soon, but I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate Raelleus on this blog, and let him know, there is not only a fan base, but one that will go out and buy this thing like hotcakes.

So, run, do not walk to get this thing. Rest assured, I will read it and review it soon!

Signal from Podcast at Ground Zero and musings about Podcasts.

It was good to hear this morning from Podcast at Ground Zero! We were worried that like Red Diamond Six Actual, there were Soviets in the wire. Good to hear this is not actually true and their podcast will continue.

I personally found their broadcasts fun, and informative, and like another couple faves of mine, Meeples and Miniatures and The Brit, the Yank, and the Hobby, they are some of the gold standard on the way genre (be it gaming or PA in general) podcasts SHOULD be done. They are well done, the hosts have done their homework before hand, and they stay on topic.

Too many podcasts are well, long rambling messes where by the end you're saying, "that is 45 minutes of my life I will not get back." The editing is also very well done, and they have engaging guests talking about things we, the listeners want. (this is especially true for Podcast at Ground Zero).

Might I take "500 Miles..." into podcast? Probably not. If anyone judges by my efforts on FB Live, I make a rather big hash of it, too many "ums" and "ahs" while I am trying to collect my thoughts before I speak. I mean it would be fun to have a Twilight: 2000 oriented podcast, but I am not the guy to do it, I will stick to writing, it's what I am good at (if I can be arrogant enough to say that).

That said, I highly recommend Podcast at Ground Zero for many of the topics I have mentioned here, while those topics aren't shall we say, illustrated on the Podcast (though they are sometimes on the video podcast), the food for thought they can provide for games and campaigns are well worth the listen, and they have a deep library you can listen to while you wait for the duo to come back and record new episodes.

So, gather round, turn on the battered old radio, and listen to a weak signal coming somewhere from the Post-Apocalyptic wilds, I promise, you won't be disappointed.

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Yes..Another of Those Short Posts! Lots of Thank Yous Need to Go Out!

1. First, I want to say thanks again for all those who have supported the blog. With the recent release of the East African Sourcebook, and all the positive buzz here? Twilight: 2000 is back, with a vengeance. And to me? That is a good thing. Spreading the word of 80's post-apocalyptic fun is to me, a labor of joy..and doing it with miniatures? Even more fun. So to all the blog supporters and those spreading the word? Thanks to all of you (especially the members of the Red Storm Rising Wargaming and Twilight: 2000 groups on Facebook, you didn't write me off as some crazy spammer, and look what this thing has become, you guys put me there!) , and thanks to Marc Miller, for all he is doing to keep the game alive.

2. I want to again, give Covert Intervention Games another shout out. They mentioned us! Yep, that's right. "500 Miles.." is becoming a force in the hobby. A small force, to be sure, but it's always nice to be noticed, and I give a lot of credit to you, the reader. Thanks!

3. As you know, I am slowly but surely running out of 1st Ed modules to evaluate from a miniatures standpoint. Not to complain at all, but I intend to write some more about miniatures and modelling soon (I did promise). Specifically, I want to write about technicals and gun trucks and what you can accomplish in modeling them. As my modeling skills are to be fair..moderate at best, if anyone wants to contribute their work to discuss in an article? I'd appreciate it.

4. Please know, as much as I write this blog, and will be contributing the lions share of the work, I am not above, nor would I shrug off guest posts. In fact, I would welcome them. There is a whole big community out there, and I would love to hear from it. What would I be looking for?
  • Modelling articles?
  • Painting tips?
  • Terrain making tips?
  • Reviews of products I haven't mentioned here that might be of use to a tabletop gamer looking to do Twilight: 2000 inspired games?
  • Scenarios and AARs of games you have done that were inspired by the milleu?
I will be doing all these things and more, but I wanted to give you, the reader a chance to contribute as well.

So, if you're interested, fire up the word processor, I would love to see what comes of it. And as always, spread the word. "500 Miles.." is out there, and we'd like to reach all interested corners of the internet!

Friday, April 14, 2017

Yet another short post.

Lots to say, and lots to write, but I will keep this as short as I can, as people I am sure want more module reviews (They have been rather popular, to be honest.)

1. As I wrote on the updated version of my 20mm Review Page, I have had some favorable email conversations with the Managing Partner & Founder of Covert Intervention Games (CIG), Mr J Reid "Streak" Denton, CIG are the new owners of the Force20 line. He set me straight on some things, praised the blog, and generally is a good egg. I won't reveal the entire email, as I consider it privileged communication until told otherwise. But, it's nice to see the blog getting noticed by the industry.

2. Ehliem is having a sale until the 22nd of April, their "Not Going to Salute Sale". If you want to get into Twilight: 2000 on the tabletop in 20mm with some really great figures (including the only place you're going to get American Cav), this would be the time to do it. Not to mention, they turned the Cav "tops" into Modular Miniatures with new "bottoms" (yes, that sounded a mite naughty). This has exciting potential, if you ask me. (UPDATE: THE SALE HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL SATURDAY, THE 22ND OF APRIL)

3. As some of you know, I am a working writer in the industry on a very small scale level. My first effort, Red Star, White Lights, (and also sold here) was moderately successful, and well-reviewed. I am hoping my new effort, covering West Berlin, "Red Star, Burning Streets" is as successful, but we're early in the process of getting the rough draft reviewed and the map sketches completed. As for a release date, at this point, "it's ready when it is ready."

4. I want to plug this blog I found, the Charge Blog. It's "Great Big Modern Wargaming Rules Comparison" is an excellent article and one I highly recommend. Heck, it has rules sets I didn't know were out there.

5. Finally, I want to thank people again for their support of this blog. It's meant a lot to me as I write this thing. It is a quirky concept, to be sure, for a "zombie" game (To me, Twilight: 2000 is a concept that refuses to die, and I like that). I guess what I am hoping is that people spread the word about this little patch of the internet. And if you have useful pictures of Poland, or something to add? Please contact me care of the blog. I would love to hear your input and see if we can't incorporate it into a blog post sometime?

That's all for now, a review of Red Star, Lone Star, is coming soon!

Blog News...and a bit about villages...

Ok, first, the blog/personal news. Even with the weather, the convention season marches on. And so do I. I have managed to finagle a day trip on Saturday to Cold Wars. I try to make the various HMGS cons as often as I can (have a long, and happy history with them), but yeah, with the upcoming nuptials? That probably will be my only con this year, though who knows?

But I am excited to potentially see fans and other curious readers (I suspect the latter outnumbers the former), I'll be the fella in the black shirt with the first ed Twilight: 2000 cover on the front!

Yeah, I will stand out..but that's the point, no?

Anyhow, enough about me and my travels!

A Few Notes About Villages

Villages are the usual touchstones of every Twilight: 2000 adventure. They're the road stops on the post-apocalyptic road picture Twilight:2000 can become. And the problems are many, some of the more memorable include the little village of Ostrow, who was occupied (very) unwillingly by the Soviets in Escape from Kalisz, to Dobrizieden, who had an American unit in residence (with a somewhat unstable and certainly haunted commander), in Black Madonna.

Not all problems are gameable on the tabletop, but many can be, given an imaginative and resourceful referee.

Take Dobriziden. At first glance, this would seem like a hard thing to base a miniatures game around, right? Wrong. Dobriziden has some fairly interesting neighbors. To the north, there is the remains of the 129th Motor Rifle Division, which according to Black Madonna, is holding together under Colonel Kasnov's middle of the road leadership till he can march the division home in the spring (the adventure taking place in the Fall of 2000). The division is teetering on the edge of joining the 9th and 38th Tank Divisions in flying apart and becoming bandits scattered all across Eastern Poland.

To the south? There is the Markgraf of Silesia. The Markgraf is by no means your stereotypical fascist maniac, but he is someone who can at best, be charitably described as a warlord. Now, that said, like many of the more "benevolent" war lords to be found in the world of Twilight: 2000, he usually asks "please" before he annexes you, and would rather you join willingly, pay his taxes and in return, he brings law, order, and peace. He is also very involved in the running of his kingdom, and is not above replacing a bad subordinate or two, probably violently. In short, he is about as good as you can expect under the circumstances.

This does put Dobriziden in a bit of a fix. The people are very attached to B Troop for the things they have done to protect the town. In the adventure White Eagle, we have a throw away bit where Dobriziden joins the Margraveate, and Molly's position as mayor is pretty much confirmed, but I never thought much of that resolution.

A better resolution? Or perhaps a more challenging one? Captain Warren gets word that Operation Omega is happening and the USAEUR is going home. She cannot in good conscience leave the town of Dobriziden undefended, and yet, she knows some of her troopers are going to want to go home, probably enough of them to matter. As much as Dobriziden has become a second home, it's not Idaho, where most of the 116th ACR hails from, so, Warren hatches an almost insane plan. She decides to try and march the people of Dobriziden to the Warta, where an enterprising tugboat captain has promised to sail the lot of them to Bremerhaven, and home.

The tabletop opportunities there are rife, think Battlestar Galactica, minus the space elements, instead of a "rag-tag fleet searching for Earth", it's a "rag-tag column headed for the Warta." Marauder ambushes, set piece raids on Soviet positions, or perhaps a Margavate roadblock trying to convince the column to turn around and go home, there's plenty of possibilities.

And that's just one village folks...and there's a lot of villages in Twilight: 2000.
